The adventure started when one of us discovered the Art Doll Journey site on the Internet, and thought: "I want to do that! I've got to do that!" She told a friend, who told a friend, who told another friend, until we were eight. We all live within about 60 km of one another, in South Africa, so we decided to meet at a coffee shop at the Kariba Ranch Art Center once a month to pass our dolls along. Other Art Doll collaborations have required that the dolls travel by post from artist to artist, and meeting face to face simplifies matters.
Our first exchange was on 8 January 2004, and the dolls went back to their owners for final finishing on 12 August.
Special thanks to Zurika, Este and Barbara of Kariba Ranch for their enthusiastic support, help and hospitality
If you would like to start your own group, have a look at the minutes of our first meeting, where we finalized our rules and regulations.
The ninth doll on this page (Mr Ball, Soccer's Spirit) represents a spin-off from the project. Art students from the Vaal University of Technology are participating in a similar doll collaboration project as part of their Communications course. The results could be of interest to teachers of English to non-English speakers. The project offers many as yet unexploited possibilities, and has been received with growing enthusiasm by both male and female students. |

We hope that you will enjoy having a look at our project. We would love it if you took the time to sign our guest book, or even dropped us a line |

12 August 2004: the last exchange...
We are displaying mixed emotions - feeling good about what we've achieved, glad that we've made it to the end, sad that it's nearly over.
We have invested in each other, given of ourselves, discovered new talents and honed new skills, we've experienced healing - all of us have grown. |
