Reading is for Nerds and Playing with Dolls for Girls
Overcoming language and cultural barriers by using literature and dolls at the Vaal University of Technology, South Africa
Although English is the language of tertiary education in South Africa, it is the second or third language of the vast majority of South African students. This has a negative impact on the acquisition of learning.
Twenty-four second year Fine Art students are currently participating in an "Art Doll Project" as a part of their Communication Skills course. The aim was to create a challenging, but emotionally safe environment, where active involvement in the search for meaning and the construction of knowledge would lead to overcoming linguistic and cultural hurdles.
